Metro UI for my project of Interactive CD

There was a project for us [ Shaswot Singh Adhikari, Aneeta Sharma and me ] to develop an interactive CD that contain collections of free software. As a designer, I had to design and Shaswot Singh Adhikari and Aneeta Sharma were the programmer. So, I have to design the cool User Interface for the easy CD browsing. I don't know what sort of Interface to use for this. After couple of hour of thinking and experimenting the designs I got the concepts of Metro UI :) for the development of OpenCD v4.0 code name: soonya [सुन्य]. Then after, my hands were busy on designing the User Interface and my other two friends were busy on programming my design to give the feel of Metro UI by action script 3.0. After two days of continue works we finally finished the projects and packed whole the pakage in an iso which was ready to be burned in the CD. Hence a complete OpenCD v4.0 was developed with code name: [ सुन्य ].

Almost 50 students from Budhanikantha schoo, British Gorkha, and Whitehouse along with Principal, Vice Principal, Computer teacher were present in this program conducted by BKSC doNet club.

Why they don't understand, why is MSP for?

The way student doing post on MIC Nepal's facebook group was really making me worried. Why some students are saying this OS is good and this one is bad. Be clear that all are the products of technology. And we are still the students. We have to learn a lot about the technology whether its Microsoft or linux or Apple or any others. Why they don't understand why the FB group of MIC Nepal is created for. MSP banne dhuun ma Microsoft rocks Linux Sucks and MSP banna napaako ma Microsoft sucks and Linux rocks. Its not the good attitude of a students. We are going to represent Microsoft on our colleges as Microsoft's Student partners. The MIC Nepal has done good job by moderating its settings on Facebook Group. MIC Nepal is another good platform for the student like us. Thank you from my hearts to the Moderator and MIC Nepal. I am just expressing my feelings what I just viewed on MIC Nepal's Facebook Group.

I too had applied for MSP in Nepal via MIC Nepal. I proudly say that I am Linux user because it is what taught in our college i.e Nepal College of Information Technology (NCIT) which is affiliated under Pokhara University. There are Powerful Linux Lab as well as Powerful Windows Lab too in my college. We are learning on both platforms. The MSP Applicants must be very clear that saying good for Microsoft or Neglecting Linux will represent s you who you are. Such attitude makes crystal clear what you are and what you are capable of.

Microsoft has created a short video for the Linux foundation on their 20th birthday. In the video, Microsoft pokes fun at the relationship between Linux and Microsoft over the years. The video kicks off by saying it’s Microsoft VS. Linux and goes over the troubled past the two organizations have bickered about over the years.

While the two organizations have fought, it shows that Microsoft does have respect for the Linux organization and generally offers an olive branch to the group. Either way you look at it, Microsoft and Linux have a lot more in common than people might think and if the two did team up, the possibilities are infinite.

Orientation at MIC Nepal

Wow! The orientation at Microsoft Innovation Center, Nepal was really fascinating and enjoyable. I had applied for Microsoft's MSP program and my orientation was fixed at August 12. Unluckily there was Strike and Protest by Some group of people and there was Nepal Banda :( It takes about 1.5 hrs to go to MIC Nepal at Khichapokhari on foot from Patan Durbar Square. It really sucks. However the mind blowing presentation of Allen Bailochan Tuladhar, Raju Shrestha and Pradeep Kandel made me excited to be MSP. All the stuffs like Microsoft Certification, Digital Citizen, Microsoft Brainworks, Kiosk, MTA, MSDA, MSDNAA etc were so good. The Green T-shirt with slogan "I will make DIFFERENCE" was really cool. But for me I got the LARGE size T-shirt which is not fitted for me :( so sad. The machine called KIOSK from the team of Sonika Mandhar was really appreciable. I could see similar type of machine in my college, NCIT which was called as Freedom Toaster which is not yet the complete project of ours. Good Job Sonika that you have did it.

There was a session to name the newly created Windows Mobile Phone Apps. Several groups were formed and group discussions were made by us. Our group had an idea to named it as FOST i.e Flower On Single Touch. Actually this is the apps created by an Intern guy at MIC Nepal. Here I am not going to explain details about that apps. For further details of that apps , you can join Microsoft Innovation Center, Nepal and have the queries there.

I was really impressed by the song called "Now Generation- Black Eyed Peas" and there was lots of fun activities at MIC Nepal.
I also found positive thinking of Microsoft towards opensource project and Linux. There is also an open source project hosting website of Microsoft called as codeplex.com where lots of opensource project are hosted. You guys better check it well.. he he

Japan earthquake, Twitter and Facebook

Websites, powered by broadband connections, became a lifeline for many when mobile phone networks and some telephone landlines collapsed in the hours following the 8.9 scale earthquake.

For many, Twitter, the microblogging site and Facebook, have become the easiest, quickest and most reliable way of keeping in touch with relatives as well as providing emergency numbers and information to those in stricken areas.

Even the US State Department resorted to using Twitter to publish emergency numbers, and informing Japanese residents in America how to contact families back in Asia. Relief organisations used Twitter to post information for non-Japanese speakers to lists of shelters for those left homeless.

Skype, the phone service that operates over the internet, and Google, the information website, also became invaluable resources for those searching for missing relatives.

Many mobile phone networks are unable to cope in the immediate aftermath of a crisis, if hundreds of thousands of customers try to make a call or send a text at the same time, as many Londoners discovered during the July 2007 terrorist incidents.

In Japan mobile phone carriers were limiting voice calls on congested networks, with NTT DoCoMo restricting up to 80 per cent of voice calls, especially in Tokyo. Softbank and Au, rival phone companies, were also affected, with Tokyo residents unable to send text messages to friends and relatives.

Skype, however, continued to work well, as did Facebook and Twitter as well as Mixi, Japan's most popular social networking site. Jill Murphy, a teacher from Liverpool, said she kept in touch with her 15-year-old cousin via Facebook chat – an instant messaging service run by the popular website. "She was Facebook chatting from under her desk at Yokohama International School, while the quake was going on. It was absolutely amazing.

"She couldn't contact her parents a few miles away – the phones were down and the trains had stopped running – but we knew she was OK on the other side of the world. Facebook and Twitter are automatically the first place you now go to to find out what is going on."

Twitter, which allows users to post very short messages – no longer than 140 characters long – became very popular with people trying to find out news. People in Japan used it to post news about how serious the situation was where they were, along with uploads of mobile videos they had recorded.

Frequently these videos were viewed by hundreds of thousands of people before the mainstream media had picked up on them and rebroadcast the footage.

Within an hour, more than 1,200 tweets a minute were coming from Tokyo. By the end of Friday, American time, a total of 246,075 Twitter posts using the term "earthquake" had been posted.

The Red Cross was initially overwhelmed with people using its Family Links website, which helps track people during an emergency. Within a couple of hours Google stepped in, launching a version of its person finder tool for the earthquake, Person Finder: 2011 Japan Earthquake. Offered in both Japanese and English web sites, the tool has a link for people seeking information about friends and loved ones in areas affected by the quake and tsunami and it had another link for people wanting to post information about individuals.

Technology helped in other ways. NHK, the Japanese government television broadcaster, was streaming footage via iPhone applications to viewers on the other side of the world, allowing people thousands of miles away, and even those without televisions, to watch live pictures.

My new Profile

Facebook has just introduced its new profile design. It isn’t a major design overhaul. Theres Just some minor tweaks to make information more visible to visitors browsing your profile.

Instead of having to click the info tab, your information is now displayed right at the top. This change not only allows someone to understand you easily and quickly,it also prompts you to fill up the missing information in your profile summary (It isn’t cool to have brief dull intro). With more information, Facebook advertisers are able to target users better. Besides for better user experience, that is probably another motivation for the change.

Tagged photos are also displayed at the top to quickly allow visitors to understand your past happenings through images. It’s pretty cool. But the only concern is that Facebook allows any friends to tag an user in an image. It’s easier to play a prank this way.

Android- A revolution

Android is a mobile operating system initially developed by Android Inc. Android was purchased by Google in 2005. Android is based upon a modified version of the Linux kernel. Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated to develop and release Android to the world. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. Unit sales for Android OS smartphones ranked first among all smartphone OS handsets sold in the U.S. in the second and third quarters of 2010,with a third quarter market share of 43.6%.

Android has a large community of developers writing application programs ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 100,000 apps available for Android. Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can be downloaded from third party sites (except on AT&T, which disallows this). Developers write in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.

The unveiling of the Android distribution on 5 November 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 79 hardware, software, and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices.Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License, a free software and open source license.

The Android operating system software stack consists of Java applications running on a Java based object oriented application framework on top of Java core libraries running on a Dalvik virtual machine featuring JIT compilation. Libraries written in C include the surface manager, OpenCore media framework, SQLite relational database management system, OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics API, WebKit layout engine, SGL graphics engine, SSL, and Bionic libc. The Android operating system consists of 12 million lines of code including 3 million lines of XML, 2.8 million lines of C, 2.1 million lines of Java, and 1.75 million lines of C++.

Silverlight to HTML5

Adobe isn’t the only company being tempted by the sweet taste of HTML5, Microsoft has a hankering for the stuff too.

Despite its past efforts to shape Silverlight into the leading cross-platform runtime for the web and the desktop, Microsoft now says that its strategy and plans for Silverlight “has shifted.”

ZDNet’s Mary-Jo Foley spoke with Bob Muglia, the president of Microsoft’s server and tools business about the lack of focus on Siverlight at the company’s Professional Developers Conference this week.

Muglia’s response was pretty telling. Although he reaffirmed Microsoft’s commitment to making Silverlight the development platform for Windows Phone, he noted that the cross-platform solution Microsoft sees going forward is HTML.

Speaking with Foley, Muglia said, “HTML is the only true cross platform solution for everything, including (Apple’s) iOS platform.”

This is a big admission from the company that has spent years trying to push Silverlight as a cross-platform technology forward. As a video technology — indeed even as an application technology — Silverlight and WPF are actually pretty nice. I attended a two-day XAML workshop held at Microsoft’s Atlanta offices in 2009 and was very impressed with the capabilities and the toolsets that were possible within Silverlight.

However, despite the prevalence of the .NET platform on Windows (Windows) and in the enterprise, Silverlight has had a problem gaining traction across the web. With the exception of the Olympics and a few other live broadcasts, you almost never see Silverlight used on the web.

Likewise, the number of desktop applications built using Silverlight are nascent in comparison to the growing number of Adobe Air (adobe AIR) applications. Aside from Seesmic Desktop (Seesmic Desktop), it’s hard to think of any cross-platform apps that are built using Silverlight.

All the while, Microsoft is increasingly embracing HTML5. The company’s recent launch of Internet Explorer 9 beta was promoted using a number of different HTML5-specific web pages and promotions. Silverlight may not have been mentioned much during PDC, but HTML5 certainly was.

It’s clear that Microsoft — like Adobe, Apple and Google (Google) — sees that HTML5 is the technology that will work across the broadest stretch of devices — and more importantly, will work on future devices.

Yes, the W3C has stated that the HTML5 spec isn’t yet ready for full use, and in a broad, global sense, this is true. However, when you look at the types of devices that individuals will be buying today and tomorrow, and not the device they already own, it’s clear that HTML5 is the technology that is going to have built-in support.

As a technology, Silverlight has a lot of promise and we think it is still interesting. Still, we can’t help but think Microsoft is making a better strategic move to focus on HTML5 as its cross-platform solution going forward.

3G @ Mt.Everest

Climbers at the top of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, will now be able to make video calls and surf the Internet on their mobile phones, a Nepalese telecom group claims.

Ncell, a subsidiary of Swedish phone giant TeliaSonera, said Thursday it had set up a high-speed third-generation (3G) phone base station at an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,000 feet) near Gorakshep village in the Everest region.

"Today we made the (world’s) highest video call from Mount Everest base camp successfully. The coverage of the network will reach up to the peak of the Everest," Ncell Nepal chief Pasi Koistinen told reporters in Kathmandu.

The installation will also help tens of thousands of tourists and trekkers who visit the world’s highest mountain every year.

Climbers who reached its 8,848-metre peak previously depended on expensive and erratic satellite phone coverage and a voice-only network set up by China Mobile in 2007 on the Chinese side of the mountain.

"This is a great milestone for mobile communications as the 3G high speed internet will bring faster, more affordable telecommunication services from the world’s tallest mountain," said Lars Nyberg, chief executive of TeliaSonera, which owns 80 percent of Ncell.

The 3G services will be fast enough to make video calls and use the Internet, said the company, which also claims the world’s lowest 3G base at 1,400 meters (4,595 feet) below sea level in a mine in Europe.

Despite the installation in Everest, telecom services cover less than one-third of the 28 million people of Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world.

TeliaSonera said it planned to invest 100 million dollars in the next year to ensure that mobile coverage increases to more than 90 percent of the Himalayan nation’s population.

The 3G network on Everest puts TeliaSonera ahead of state-controlled Nepal Telecom, Indian-owned United Telecom and China Mobile.

Around 3,000 people have climbed to the Everest summit since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first people to conquer the peak in 1953.

Ubuntu 10.10 beta review

Ubuntu 10.04 is a hard release to beat, though Maverick does improve upon the release. The Ubuntu Project and company behind it, Canonical, have put in a lot of hard work to offer up a Linux distro that could compete with Mac OS X. It’s not quite there yet for a few reasons, but it’s getting inexorably closer — with the largest gap being applications.

When the Ubuntu 10.10 beta was released on September 2nd, I decided to take a look at it and (briefly) the Kubuntu 10.10 beta as well. To put it through its paces I installed it on an Intel Core Duo machine with 2GB of RAM, a Dell Studio laptop with a Core i7 and 8GB of RAM, and also within VMware Workstation 7.1 for Linux.

The installer has, once again, been revamped and improved. The first screen is a sort of readiness check that informs the user what’s going to happen, suggests that a network connection is a good thing to have, and allows the user to install updates and non-free software at the same time as the install. This is a really nice improvement, though it’s unlikely to impress those who frown on non-free software. The “install updates” feature, though, is very nice.

A couple of minor quibbles with the choices made by the installer, however. Specifically, the partitioning and user information. By default, Ubuntu wants to provide just one massive root (/) partition without separate home partitions. This is a mistake, as anyone who’s updated or recovered a Linux system should know. And the default for the user is to log in automatically — probably more familiar for former Windows and Mac OS X users, but hardly recommended. These can be changed by experienced users, but it’s not setting good habits for those who do not know better.

Over the years, the Ubuntu project has refined the installer over and over again and done a fantastic job of making Linux easy to install. While installation is no doubt a barrier for many new users, so is the lack of applications following the install. At some point, one needs to consider the installer good enough and start focusing on applications that users need. In other words, it’s installable already, so stop faffing around with the installer and start focusing on apps.

While we’re on the topic of applications, the default selection in GNOME is decent enough. This release dumps F-Spot in favor of Shotwell, and updates all the usual suspects (like Firefox, OpenOffice.org, etc.) but aside from that — not much has changed on the application front. Shotwell doesn’t seem to be quite on par with F-Spot yet, so it’s deeply unclear why Ubuntu is switching.

I had less time to really look over Kubuntu, partially because the installer crashed on one of the test machines I tried it on. Since this is a beta, I’m going to assume that will improve by the final release.

The overall desktop experience is largely unchanged from Ubuntu 10.04. The theme has been refined a bit from the LTS, but it’s pretty much the same. Pleasing to the eye, if not the mouse. The window buttons are still on the left-hand side and still out of place. One of the UI elements that was much debated for 10.10, a new Ubuntu Family font, has been left by the wayside in the beta and if the bug reports and comments from Mark Shuttleworth are any indication, will remain so until 11.04.

I was surprised to find that, even though the installer offered to install proprietary software, I still had to enable support for MP3s later. Flash was also not installed. Presumably this will be fixed by the final release or the installer will be changed so that it’s not promising to install software that’s not installed.

he Software Center has undergone another revamp and is really slick. Adding applications via the Software Center is easy and most users will find it very easy to use. It’s not quite as simple as, say, adding an app via the iOS App Store, but it’s close.

One of the improvements in the Software Center is the ability to purchase software. Now, most of the software you get with Ubuntu is, of course, under a free or open source license. But there’s some proprietary end user software out there for sale. The first application to appear for sale in the beta is Fluendo’s DVD player application. It should be interesting to see what other applications appear in the future. While some folks may not applaud enabling the sale of proprietary apps, I think it’s one of the steps needed for long-term success of Linux on the desktop.

Actually, what’s needed for long-term success is more applications. The fact is that even as well-polished as Ubuntu is, it’s missing one thing that makes Windows, Mac OS, and iOS so popular — applications that everyone wants. The basics are more or less covered, but Linux still suffers from a lack of applications when held up next to Windows or the Mac. Where’s an Evernote replacement? How about real games? A Linux app that could compete with Bento for the Mac? As solid as the basic apps are, there’s an enormous gap for more specialized applications. It’d be nice to see the Ubuntu Project and/or Canonical delivering some of those apps that need to be written from scratch.

Open source is a community effort. It succeeds because everybody benefits from the work that companies and individuals put into shared projects. I raise this because it is very noticeable that much of the focus going into Maverick is entirely Ubuntu-centric. Let’s compare with, say, Fedora. Fedora as a project puts a fair amount of work into upstreams like NetworkManager, Moblin/MeeGo, Sugar, and GNOME. When Fedora contributor pour a lot of effort into something like GNOME, it all benefits the other consumers of GNOME.

Ubuntu has always been about polish, making the work done by upstreams more suitable for end users. That work does constitute a legitimate contribution, for certain, but it’s hard to escape how much in Maverick is unlikely to flow back to other projects. The concentration of effort on Ubuntu One, the Ubiquity installer, and notifications that aren’t upstream in GNOME, all benefit Ubuntu and only Ubuntu. It would be nice to see Canonical investing as well in fully open applications that could be distributed with every distro.

In a technical level, there’s little to complain about with Maverick. It’s not a groundbreaking release, but it’s very solid. It’s as user-friendly as any Linux desktop release I’ve ever seen. The beta has a few glitches, but that’s what betas are for.

Netbook users will also want to upgrade with this release, as the new Ubuntu Netbook interface has shown a lot of improvement and is very usable. This release also features the new uTouch drivers to allow for multitouch, if you have the right hardware. Might come in handy if anyone ships a tablet with Ubuntu 10.10 or if you want to use hardware like Apple’s multitouch mouse.

Beta Verdict: 4/5
But most users can safely wait out Maverick and grab Ubuntu 11.04 without fear of missing anything massive. It’s not a hugely compelling release over the LTS, though it has its benefits. Users who have to be on the cutting edge will want to update, but if you really don’t enjoy the hassles that come along with an upgrade, wait for 11.04.

First Search Engine Of Nepal:EbuzzAsia

Nepal will soon have its own search engine. After the immense popularity of search engines like Google and Yahoo, a local youth has developed possibly the first search engine based in Nepal. The project was unveiled for the first time at the ongoing Midas CAN SofTech 2010.

Apar Thebe, who developed the search engine named ´ebuzz asia´, said that the search engine would be launched commercially by October. Thebe said he thought of this concept when he could not find necessary documents for his research when he was studying abroad.

“I felt that our data and information are not digitized. I worked on the search engine project to make our data and information available to all at a single click,” Thebe said.

“I first want the search engine to be liked by Nepali people,” he said, elaborating why he does not want to reveal information about his prized project.

The search engine will be launched in beta version in October. “It will take three years for us to come up with the full-fledged version,” Vinay Regmi, the chief operating officer of ebuzz asia, told myrepublica.com. He also said the ebuzz asia will be different from other search engines.

“We will have the option of a comment box where users can enter the comments and share what they could not find in our search engine. This helps us to update our data bank,” he added.

At present, the ebuzz asia team is busy digitizing the data and information. The team, however, has been facing challenge as most of our data and information are in traditional files and book shelves.

The team has employed 14 youths for the project.

“We are hopeful that information related to Nepal will be digitized and Nepali will get easy access to them,” Regmi added. He further added that they were expecting support from Central Bureau of Statistics, MoIC and universities and libraries for digitization of data.

People can use ebuzz asia to search information from any part of the world. “One can add the location of his/her home in the map as well,” Regmi added.

The ebuzz asia team said they were getting some assistance from foreign countries and were looking for some local sponsors to materialize the project.

“There are ample opportunities inside the country, we want to work hand in hand with young IT professionals who are looking for opportunities,” Thebe said.

What is svchost.exe And Why Is It Running ?

You are no doubt reading this article because you are wondering why on earth there are nearly a dozen processes running with the name svchost.exe. You can’t kill them, and you don’t remember starting them… so what are they?

So What Is It?

According to Microsoft: “svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries”. Could we have that in english please?

Some time ago, Microsoft started moving all of the functionality from internal Windows services into .dll files instead of .exe files. From a programming perspective this makes more sense for reusability… but the problem is that you can’t launch a .dll file directly from Windows, it has to be loaded up from a running executable (.exe). Thus the svchost.exe process was born.

Why Are There So Many svchost.exes Running?

If you’ve ever taken a look at the Services section in control panel you might notice that there are a Lot of services required by Windows. If every single service ran under a single svchost.exe instance, a failure in one might bring down all of Windows… so they are separated out.

Those services are organized into logical groups, and then a single svchost.exe instance is created for each group. For instance, one svchost.exe instance runs the 3 services related to the firewall. Another svchost.exe instance might run all the services related to the user interface, and so on.

So What Can I Do About It?

You can trim down unneeded services by disabling or stopping the services that don’t absolutely need to be running. Additionally, if you are noticing very heavy CPU usage on a single svchost.exe instance you can restart the services running under that instance.

The biggest problem is identifying what services are being run on a particular svchost.exe instance.Just open up Task Manager and check the “Show processes from all users” box:

Checking From the Command Line (Vista or XP Pro)

If you want to see what services are being hosted by a particular svchost.exe instance, you can use the tasklist command from the command prompt in order to see the list of services.

tasklist /SVC

The problem with using the command line method is that you don’t necessarily know what these cryptic names refer to.

Checking in Task Manager in Vista / 7

You can right-click on a particular svchost.exe process, and then choose the “Go to Service” option.

This will flip over to the Services tab, where the services running under that svchost.exe process will be selected:

The great thing about doing it this way is that you can see the real name under the Description column, so you can choose to disable the service if you don’t want it running.

Using Process Explorer in Vista or XP

You can use the excellent Process Explorer utility from Microsoft/Sysinternals to see what services are running as a part of a svchost.exe process.

Hovering your mouse over one of the processes will show you a popup list of all the services:

Or you can double-click on a svchost.exe instance and select the Services tab, where you can choose to stop one of the services if you choose.

Disabling Services

Open up Services from the administrative tools section of Control Panel, or type services.msc into the start menu search or run box.

Find the service in the list that you’d like to disable, and either double-click on it or right-click and choose Properties.

Change the Startup Type to Disabled, and then click the Stop button to immediately stop it.

You could also use the command prompt to disable the service if you choose. In this command “trkwks” is the Service name from the above dialog, but if you go back to the tasklist command at the beginning of this article you’ll notice you can find it there as well.

Google Drops Google Waves

Only a year after its release, Google's attempt at a social-networking service is being discontinued...

A little more than a year after the service was launched, Google is pulling the plug on its Google Wave social-networking service, the company said Wednesday.

"Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked," wrote Urs Hölzle, Google senior vice president for operations, in a blog post. As a result of the public indifference, "We don't plan to continue developing Wave as a stand-alone product," he said.

The company will maintain the service through the end of the year, and the technology will be rolled into other Google projects, Hölzle said. Some features are already available as open-source components, and Google will offer tools to let users "easily 'liberate' their content from Wave," he said.

Hölzle implied that Wave might have been too radical of a concept for mass adoption, despite the company's many attempts to explain it to the public.

A "Web app for real time communication and collaboration, it set a high bar for what was possible in a Web browser," he said. "We weren't quite sure how users would respond to this radically different kind of communication."

The decision seems to have been made rather speedily. As recently as Monday, the company posted information about upcoming Wave developer talks in Washington D.C. and Michigan.

At the O'Reilly Open Source Conference last month in Portland, Oregon, Google Wave developer Dan Peterson admitted, in a Wave tutorial, that early versions of the service were slow and tended to crash. Subsequent work improved performance and made the product more stable, he noted.

Analyzing the ICT development of Nepal

As we know Nepal is the country locked by the largest two countries India and China. The variation in the structure is also another geographical identification of Nepal. So Nepal was greatly influenced by the progress of the many countries in the region that had already welcomed the development of information technology (IT), particularly the two Asian superpowers, India and China. Nepal had witnessed India's ability to carve out a market in the IT sector, and was hoping to find a place in the field. Today Nepal is also aware to recognize the importance of the production and use of information and communication technology (ICT) for competitiveness and growth and the need to incorporate national information infrastructures to sustain and expand their economies. There is no question why we need to acquire IT in developing country like Nepal; however we need to know that what role IT can play in development process of these countries. The far reaching impacts of IT are not only limited to industrial production. All economic sectors including agriculture, banking, commerce, health care, education, publishing, transportation are become fast flexible. If properly used in the developing country, IT can be the main factor in increasing productivity in public administration, communications, infrastructures, industry and agriculture.

This is the overview of ICT development of Nepal. We have lot of experience for developing country toward the knowledge base society. Since the introduction of computer for census in 1972, the country made an early start compared to the other countries, including the establishment of organizations for computerization. However, in the 1980s and 1990s, Nepal slowed down its momentum to push forward the advancement of ICT industry. Starting from the 2000s, the government instituted its first ICT policy and in 2003 organized the HLCIT to take charge of national IT policies. In 2004, it promulgated the Electronics Transaction Act and now we have again the new review on IT policy 2000 and proposed the IT Policy 2067 as a measure of procedural simplification with a view to creating a hassle-free climate for the development of knowledge based Society and eliminate the poverty from Nepal.

We feel that this policy is a significant and important step in the right direction towards the developing the ICT sector and represent the society as knowledge based society. But however several challenges have beset Nepal’s efforts aimed at building upon the initial momentum that it gained in the ICT domain. Due to the lack of political constancy deterred Nepal from effectively capitalizing on the promise Unleashed by digital opportunities as the country found itself confronting a host of competing priorities ranging from the ones posed by security challenges to that of endemic poverty and poor governance. In the planning process, the government expressed its desire to meld Nepal into a knowledge-based society. The broad objective for the IT sector was to promote IT as a tool for social and economic development; to promote social development by using IT to improve agricultural, health, education, and other services and sectors; to promote economic development by establishing an IT park to produce and export low-cost software and eliminate the poverty from country which is the one of major problem for Nepal.

We have the experience of failure for completely implementing the Policy and over the last few years with scarce resources tied up in security efforts, implementation of the IT Policy has slipped from the government’s priority list. Although the institutional provisions have been put in place, the key implementing body is too under-resourced to effectively oversee implementation. We also know that e-governance in Nepal is enhancing but still not fully developed. But we can assume this process of finalizing the IT policy was a long but inclusive one.

Today we have still many problems. Political and Social Instability, Funding depend upon highly politicized and very limited facility is provided by government which is not enough and it is not fully utilized are problem in past years. So from learning the lesson from previous chapter of implementing and developing IT Policies we have to address every aspect that reflect IT Sectors. An IT Bill outlining action plans for the sector has been drafted and is awaiting Parliamentary approval. The Ministry of Science and Technology launched a subsidized programme to provide IT training. At least three of Nepal’s four universities have computer science or computer engineering degrees at the Bachelor level, and roughly 5,000 graduates are expected from these programmes over the next few years. The Ministry is planning to establish two new institutes: the Institute of Information Technology (in the IT park in Kathmandu) and the Institute of Technology (in Western Nepal, focusing on biotechnology and IT research).

At last the future directions can be viewed as although the institutional provisions have been put in place, the key implementing body HLCIT, NITC and Ministry of Science and Technology is too under-resourced to effectively oversee implementation. An implementation programme involving both the government and private sector still needs to be encouraged and supported to maximize the potential for IT in Nepal.

Germany-Spain feels more like a World Cup final

The reigning European champion vs. the runner-up. The leading scorer at this World Cup vs. No. 2 on the all-time list. The most dynamic team at this tournament vs. a squad that's yet to show its full brilliance. A three-time champion vs. a team craving its first title.

Sounds like a great World Cup final.

Too bad it'll be the semifinals when Germany and Spain face off Wednesday night at Moses Mabhida Stadium, with many expecting the winner to go on and be crowned world champion four days later.

"Two of the best teams in the World Cup have to play in the semifinal," Spain striker Fernando Torres said, "so unlucky for one of them."

There's a game in every World Cup that comes a round or two too soon, and Germany-Spain definitely qualifies.

Spain has lost all of two games since November 2006, and it ended a 44-year major title drought when it beat Germany to win the European Championship in 2008. David Villa leads World Cup scoring with five goals (Italy and France combined for five before crashing out in the group stage), and the Spanish defense hasn't allowed a goal in the knockout stage.

Germany, meanwhile, made old rivals England and Argentina look downright silly in their knockout round games, routing them by a combined score of 8-1 to reach the semifinals for a third straight World Cup. Miroslav Klose has regained his old form and, with two goals against Argentina, moved into a tie with Gerd Mueller for second place on the all-time scoring list.

But it's not just the stats that make this such a tantalizing matchup.

Few teams can keep up when Germany and Spain are at their best, but each is the other's equal.

"Spain is very strong as a unit, both in offense and defense. They have several players who can decide games and tactically they are very good," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "But at the moment we are capable of beating everyone."

Loew has remade his team since that Euro 2008 loss, bringing in several young players that have given Germany the speed and sharpness it lacked. Despite its youth — with an average age under 25, this is the second-youngest team Germany has ever sent to a World Cup — the Germans are playing with discipline and a seamless chemistry that makes their plays unfold like a symphony.

Their spacing in the midfield is awe-inspiring, their passing so exquisite it almost looks as if the ball is on an invisible wire from one player's foot to another's. As for the defense, it's simply scary. Whenever Lionel Messi or Carlos Tevez appeared on the verge of doing something in the quarterfinal, German defenders swarmed around to force a turnover or a bad shot.

And when Germany is on the counterattack, look out.

"It's probably the most complete team in the World Cup. A team that has changed since the 2008 final, with young and fresh faces," backup Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina said. "It's the most dangerous rival at the moment."

Germany will have a somewhat different look without Thomas Mueller, who has scored four goals like Klose but is suspended after picking up his second yellow card against Argentina. Then again, the Germans did OK when Klose was suspended, beating Ghana in the group stage.

While Spain's team has changed little in the last two years, it doesn't have the same flair as those European champions. Torres has struggled after having knee surgery in April, and Cesc Fabregas' status against Germany is in doubt after he hurt his right leg in practice Monday night. That's the same leg Fabregas broke in March, allowing him to play just two games before arriving in South Africa.

The Spanish were stunned by Switzerland in the group stage, and needed a late goal from Villa to beat Paraguay 1-0 in the quarters after both teams had penalty kicks saved.

Make no mistake, though, Spain is still plenty dangerous.

"For me, Spain is the favorite for the title," Loew said. "Spain has not one Messi, but several Messis who can decide a game."

The Spanish acknowledge they have not been at their best in South Africa. But part of that has been because of their opponents, Villa said, and facing Germany should allow Spain's offense to get back on track.

"The Germans have played a brilliant World Cup so far," Andres Iniesta said. "We're also at the top of our game, I think. It will be a game between two rivals who enjoy having the ball and I think it will be a beautiful battle."

All platforms: You want change? Ubuntu 10.04, the next long-term release of the free operating system, is full of change. Window buttons are on the left, default apps are replaced, the theme is new, and many more upgrades are worth exploring.

One of the first things any user will notice in the pic above, whether new to Ubuntu or a veteran Linux user, is the button layout. Ubuntu 10.04, also known as "Lucid Lynx," has opted for a left-side, Mac-style lineup of maximize/restore, minimize, and close buttons, but switched around the order, so that the close/kill button is the right-most button on a left-hand button panel. That is certainly new, and will take some getting used to. An alpha-testing friend of mine said it took "a few hours" over one or two days to start using the buttons without thinking too much about it, but he still occasionally catches himself mousing toward the wrong side of a window. Time will tell whether this was a smart long-term move for Ubuntu.

There's also a new purple/dark gray theme that's seen the usual "It's elegant"/"It's awful" debate around the net. I haven't used the beta enough to render a real verdict, but it was definitely time to try something new.

As predicted, Ubuntu 10.04 will have a built-in music store that ties together with the free 2 GB of Ubuntu One cloud storage given to each user. Ubuntu One's music store is built into the Rhythmbox music player, and once you try to access it, Ubuntu will install the proper MP3 codecs so you can, you know, play MP3s. Alas, I didn't get very far with my own installation, but it does look like a nice alternative to buying songs manually through Amazon and processing them through Rhythmbox.

Ubuntu One itself is integrated into the operating system, and logs in automatically when you sign into your account, after first setting up your credentials. The Ubuntu One folder that automatically syncs whatever you drop in it, just like Dropbox, is stashed in your home folder; why the left-hand location links don't include Ubuntu One by default, I don't know. From your user panel (detailed further down), you can set preferences for how much bandwidth Ubuntu One can use, and control which computers your Ubuntu One account syncs to.

Ubuntu is moving, with each release, toward a more social, net-connected experience built more tightly into the operating system. Clicking on your user name icon in the upper-right corner brings down a user panel that can set your chat status through the Empathy chat client, which connects to Google Talk, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, and many other protocols. You can also set up "Broadcast" preferences to send out messages through Twitter, Facebook, and other short messaging/social network services. And Ubuntu One preferences are controlled through this panel as well.

I've called Simple Scan a big step forward for Ubuntu, as it takes something that previously involved four windows and hundreds of micro-controls and pared it down to what most people need: a "Scan" button, a rotate-and-crop tool, and a choice of just a few DPI resolution levels. Simple Scan is a default application in Ubuntu 10.04, along with the PiTiVi video editor, which I haven't had a chance to try out in much depth (I've found OpenShot to be remarkably usable of late).

There's a quick tour through what's new and changed in Ubuntu 10.04, but it's certainly not everything. Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 1 is a free download that can be used as a live CD or installation disc on most hardware.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix

There’s an old saying, “What goes around, comes around.” Ubuntu has certainly been busy pouring sweat and hard labor into theirofficial Netbook Remix edition and it’s starting to show. The next release of Ubuntu is 9.10, due next month and dubbed Karmic Koala. It is much improved over the current release.

The netbook remix edition is an official version of Ubuntu which is specifically designed for netbooks (hence the name). It is specifically designed for low resolutions and includes a number of enhancements to maximize the available screen real estate.

Netbooks are designed for life on the go. Users want an easy-to-use interface with their most commonly used applications at their fingertips. Certainly one can use any major desktop, but the advantages of a custom interface mean that users get to make better use of the little machines.

Unlike Moblin, Ubuntu Netbook Remix does not introduce a brand new desktop environment, but rather a new interface which sits on top of GNOME.

Ubuntu has started making a scene in the commercial world of computing with companies like Dell now selling more desktop and laptops with the operating system. Netbook Remix is one more offering which might help them attract more market share, if they can get manufacturers to install it on their products that is.

New Features

The upcoming version of Ubuntu will ship with the 2.6.31 Linux kernel which boasts a range of new features. One improvement is a more “stable” ext4 which is good because it will become the default file system. It will also do away with the hardware abstraction layer (HAL), instead relying on device kit and udev to configure the system’s hardware.

Other improvements include the use of GRUB version 2 as the default boot loader, as well as the usual desktop updates from GNOME and KDE.

The current release has had numerous issues with the Intel graphics driver, which has recently undergone some major changes. Most netbooks use Intel’s integrated graphics and unfortunately this has meant that graphical performance has been rather poor.

The good news is that this should be solved in Karmic as this release will include the latest version of the driver. Kernel-based mode setting will also be enabled by default with this driver, which opens up a new possibility of beautifying the boot process and making it flicker free.

In relation to the netbook remix specifically, the custom interface is becoming more refined making better use of the desktop and small amount of screen real estate. Still along the left hand side is the main program menu (where users browse for various installed packages, broken down by categories) which has received a nice updated look.

The places section on the right hand side from the current edition is now gone, which not only helps to keep the desktop less cluttered but also simplifies the interface immensely.

The whole interface is much more nicely integrated with a consistent non-distracting color scheme for the icons in the notification area. A single bar adorns the top of the screen and the lower section takes up the rest of the screen. Unlike the current version which looks like it’s plunked on top of the desktop, the menu and working areas feels much more a part of the desktop itself.

Performance

The Karmic Koala 9.10 release is not due out for another month, however anyone can test the latest development version with relative ease. So how does the netbook remix work on an Asus 1000HE netbook? It’s a standard sort of machine with a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB memory and has a good old fashioned hard drive instead of flash.

Well firstly, from the GRUB boot prompt to starting the display took 30 seconds. Another 10 seconds was required to start up the log in screen, GNOME Desktop Manager.

Logging into the desktop then took a further 20 seconds. That’s certainly not as fast as Moblin and other projects boasting boot times of around 5 seconds, but remember that they are highlyoptimized. Netbook remix is essentially just standard Ubuntu with a different interface and so uses the same packages as a desktop install.

Nevertheless, considering that one year ago this was the sort of boot time we saw on a powerful desktop, it’s not too bad at all! Once the system is up, it also performs quite well. Booting to the log in screen used only 66MB of RAM, which is nice and light. Logging onto the desktop doubled this to 136MB, still very impressive for a fully blown desktop!

On this netbook, everything worked perfectly out of the box. Linux has always been able to suspend, it’s resume that traditionally causes most of the problems, however there were no such issues here. Suspend and resume was not only quick and painless it worked seamlessly with wireless, touchpad, bluetooth, video and even the built in camera all coming back to life as the machine did. Brilliant.

In fact, this version of Ubuntu works so well that using it for every day work is actually very attractive.

The Good

The updated interface looks great and works much better than the old one. The performance not only of the interface itself, but of the system in general, is much improved with Karmic. Everything is much more tightly integrated and the system is starting to look like a complete package rather than a hack on top of GNOME.

There are also lots of under the hood improvements, especially in the area of memory utilization which is good news for lower end netbooks.

Skype open source? Ain't gonna happen

The blogosphere was all a-twitter yesterday when rumors surfaced that Skype, the popular internet telephony application, would be released as open source “in the nearest future“. It turns out that Skype’s plans are not so grandiose, and even if they were, questions about who owns the code would prevent it from happening.

In a clarification posted today on Skype’s Linux blog, developer Stanislav Karchebny (aka berkus) wrote:

Yes, there’s an open source version of Linux client being developed. This will be a part of larger offering, but we can’t tell you much more about that right now. Having an open source UI will help us get adopted in the “multicultural” land of Linux distributions, as well as on other platforms and will speed up further development. We will update you once more details are available.

The key words here are “open source UI”. Oliver Faurax, who initially broke the story Monday, posted a Q&A on his site which explains:

Q. Will the protocol be open?

No. Berkus commented on my blog and on the Skype Linux blog that they will open the GUI code, and not the library. The most likely outcome is that they will provide a libskype closed binary library that will allow someone to communicate with a GUI.

One reason the library will not be open source is that Skype doesn’t, um, have the source. According to a lawsuit filed in September over Skype intellectual property,

An executable-only object code form of the GI Software was licensed by Joltid to Skype, a well-known Internet-based company that provides users throughout the world with free or low-cost telephone services over the Internet. Skype did not obtain a license to the GI Software source code, however, and the license it did obtain was terminated based on Skype’s breaches of the license agreement.

In other words, Skype doesn’t own their own core technology. If you believe Joltid, Skype is not even supposed to have the source code. Unless copyright holders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom (founders of Joltid) agree, Skype cannot change the license on that code and release it as open source. And given that Skype recently sold for $2 billion it’s not likely they’re going to hand it over for free.

Facebook Tweaks Privacy Policy in Face of Inquiry

Bowing to pressure from Canadian regulators, social networking giant said it plans to give users more control over how data is shared on the site.
Under pressure from Canadian regulators, Facebook said today that it would implement a host of changes to its privacy practices, including a new policy governing the site's third-party applications.

The policy changes came in response to concerns raised by Canada's privacy commissioner, Jennifer Stoddart, who had threatened to take Facebook to court if it did not bring its policies into compliance with Canadian law.

"We're satisfied that, with these changes, Facebook is on the way to meeting the requirements of Canada's privacy law," Stoddart told reporters during a news conference this morning.

Facebook said that it will begin requiring developers to provide users with more explicit notice about how their information is collected and used through applications on the site's platform. Facebook said it will also modify its API so that applications will need to give users more detailed controls over what information they share.

"You can expect that users will have more control over the exact permissions that they're giving," Dave Morin, Facebook's senior platform manager, told reporters on a conference call this morning.

But those tweaks, expected to roll out in the next year, will mean that developers will have to modify the code of the existing applications on Facebook.

"We certainly sympathize with developers that this will be a process that both Facebook and the developer community will have to go through together," Morin said.

The policy changes announced today build on the set of streamlined privacy controls Facebook said it would adopt in July, which are to be geared toward simplifying the way users manage how their information is shared on the site.

Facebook also committed today to modify its privacy policies to clarify practices on the site, such as the collection of users' birthdates and how information is used to target advertising.

The company also said it would take steps to educate users about privacy on the site and encourage them to review their settings. New registrants will be invited to take a "privacy tour" explaining how information is collected and shared on the site.

Under the new changes, Facebook agreed to clarify the distinction between deleting and deactivating an account in terms of how their data is stored. Morin said that when a user deletes an account, Facebook purges the information within a couple weeks. But the company said it intends to retain information when a person simply deactivates an account as a courtesy, as many users comes back to retrieve photos and other content even after they have essentially abandoned the site.

The policy changes resolve an inquiry launched more than a year ago by Canadian regulators.

Microsoft extends Windows 7 Family Pack to Europe

Microsoft stepped up plans to push Windows 7 upgrades to European users. The company said its decision to keep Internet Explorer 8 in the OS in Europe has enabled it to make a family-pack option available to customers there in October.

In a post on the Windows 7 blog, Windows Communications Manager Brandon LeBlanc said that the Windows 7 Family Pack, a version of the OS for households with multiple PCs, will be available in the U.K., Ireland, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden on Oct. 22 when Windows 7 is made generally available worldwide. Microsoft previously said the software would only be available in the U.S. and Canada.

The Family Pack allows users to install Windows 7 Home Premium for a reduced price on up to three PCs in a household that already has a version of Windows installed. Like the U.S. offer, the European offer is for a limited time. The company did not assign the offer a deadline but said it is only while supplies last.

Microsoft is able to offer Windows 7 Family Pack in Europe because it reversed a decision to pull IE 8 out of the OS there. Instead, it will offer Windows 7 with IE pre-installed and a ballot-screen option so users can install a competitive browser, LeBlanc said. This allows Microsoft to have a version of Windows 7 that users in Europe can upgrade to in October, he said.

Previously, Microsoft had said it would offer a Windows 7 E version of the OS without IE 8 as a remedy stemming from the European Commission's antitrust suit against the company. Windows 7 E was not going to have a browser, so a user would have to do a clean install of the new OS rather than upgrade from a previous version of Windows. Now that IE will be provided in the European Union, upgrades are possible again without the clean install.

Microsoft changed its mind on July 24 about pulling IE 8 out of Windows 7 and said it would offer the ballot screen option that E.U. authorities proposed.

The availability of a full version of Windows 7 in Europe also means users there will have access to Windows 7 retail boxes in full and upgrade versions for pre-order starting Sept. 1 and to buy on Oct. 22. However, Microsoft will continue to make Windows 7 N versions available in Europe. That version does not include Windows Media Player and is the result of another European antitrust suit over the inclusion of that software in Windows.

Customers who have already pre-ordered the full version of Windows 7 E in the E.U. will now receive full versions of Windows 7 with IE8 included, the company said.

Microsoft also on Monday unveiled a limited-time discounted upgrade for Windows users in the U.K. People who purchase Windows 7 Home Premium between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31 can upgrade for £79.99 (US$131) rather than the standard pricing of £99.99. The regular upgrade pricing will go back into effect Jan. 1, 2010.

Software lets cell phones write on air

Cell phones can be modified to act as pens that record messages written in the air that can then be sent as e-mails.

Researchers at Duke University wrote software for a Nokia N95 phone that interprets the movements of the phone -- measured by its on-board accelerometer -- as letters. The notes written this way can be packaged up as the text of e-mail messages and sent to the user as a reminder.

5 lab technologies that could reinvent cell phones

The example used by the authors of a paper about the PhonePoint Pen has a person writing the airport parking garage level and section number and e-mailing it to himself so he can find his car when he returns from his trip. The researchers presented the paper at the recent Sigcomm conference in Barcelona.

For more lengthy writing, PhonePoint developers envision a phone with its camera pointed at a keyboard printed on a sheet of paper being able to record what users "type" on the paper keyboard.

Writing in thin air has some challenges. The accelerometer in the phone detects motion in three directions, but can't detect rotation. So if writers rotate their wrists while writing, the phone won't know it, and its interpretation of the motions it does detect will be off.

To deal with this, the researchers recommend holding the phone like a pen and imagining one corner as the tip, and then not rotating that hand while writing. Alternatively, the researchers call for breaking down the elements of a letter and pausing after each part is drawn to allow the phone to start afresh with a new sense of position when the next stroke is drawn. Users have to be careful not to rotate the phone in the middle of a stroke.

Researchers say the experimental technology could be enhanced by creating a mechanism to give users a real-time display of what they just wrote. They are working on filtering out motions unrelated to writing, such as the movements of a person while on a train that is lurching side to side.

Hm. I gotta stick with the proles on this one. It needs to weigh two pounds, run for a full 24 hours unplugged, have an HD display, and play Crysis.

Symbian Sets Timetable For Software Rollout

The Symbian Foundation has outlined the release plans for the open source software, and it's an aggressive timetable that could have the open source Symbian on handsets by the end of the year.

Even though Symbian is the leading operating system in the world, Nokia was seeing increased pressure from the likes of Apple's iPhone, Google's Android, Microsoft's Windows Mobile, and Research In Motion's BlackBerry. The foundation was created when Nokia purchased the remaining shares of Symbian last June with the intention of turning the popular mobile operating system into an open source, royalty-free platform under the Eclipse Public License.

In a blog post, the foundation said it expects the new version of Symbian to be "functionally complete" by the middle of the year and "hardened" by the end of 2009. This means the new version, which is being called Symbian^2, will be ready to be put on hardware by the end of the year.

The foundation said Symbian^2 will be based on S60 5.1, and it will be followed by updated versions roughly every six months.

"The intent is to 'timebox' each release by fixing the functionally complete data and including only features that deliver in time at a reasonable stability level," wrote David Wood, Symbian's executive VP for research. "This is the same principle that has worked so well with integrated release of Symbian OS in recent years."

It's unclear if users who purchase current Symbian-powered devices like the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be able to upgrade to the new OS. It's technically possible, in principle, but it will ultimately be up to the device manufacturers and mobile operators, Wood said.

Why not? Because the iPhone app store has been such a huge success, the company is only going to focus its efforts on Apple's portable gadgets from now on, founder Brian Greenstone said during a panel today at the South by Southwest conference in Austin.

Pangea has certainly been one of the luckier iPhone developers -- it got a lot of stage time during Steve Jobs' Worldwide Developers Conference keynote last year, the event where Apple unveiled the iPhone 3G. And its Enigmo app spent three weeks at the top of the paid-apps list in iTunes, the most-desired promotional spot in the business.

It's also had a distinct advantage over some other iPhone game creators: It already had working Mac games, which it ported to the iPhone at virtually no cost, just tweaking some Mac code.

But with about $2 million in net iPhone app sales since last summer -- after Apple's 30% cut -- including more than $1.5 million from Enigmo alone -- it makes sense to focus on what's working.

Graphical Data Display Manager

GDDM (Graphical Data Display Manager) is a computer graphics system for the IBM System/370 which was developed in IBM's Hursley lab, and first released in 1979. GDDM was originally designed to provide programming support for the IBM 3279 colour display terminal and the associated 3287 colour printer. The 3279 was the first colour graphics terminal that could be used in a general business environment.

GDDM was extended in the early 1980s to provide graphics support for all of IBM's display terminals and printers, and ran on all of IBM's mainframe operating systems.

GDDM also provided support for the (then current) international standards for interactive computer graphics: GKS and PHIGS. Both GKS and PHIGS were designed around the requirements of CAD systems.

GDDM comprises a number of components:

Graphics primitives - lines, circles, boxes etc.
Graphing - through the Presentation Graphics Feature (PGF)
Language support - PL/I, REXX, COBOL etc
Conversion capabilities - for example to GIF format.

GDDM remains in widespread use today, embedded in many z/OS applications, as well as in System programs.

GDDM and OS/2 Presentation Manager

When IBM and Microsoft began collaborating on the design of OS/2 in 1986 the Graphics Presentation Interface (GPI) which was the graphics API in Presentation Manager was based on IBM's GDDM and the Graphics Control Program (GCP). GCP was originally developed in Hursley for the 3270/PC-G and 3270/PC-GX terminals.

The GPI was used as the primary graphics API for the OS/2 operating system.

At the time (1980s), the graphical user interface (GUI) was still in its early stages of popularity, but already it was clear that the foundation of a good GUI was a graphics API with strong real-time interactive capabilities. Unfortunately, the design of GDDM was closer to (at the time) traditional graphics APIs like GKS, which made it unsuited for more than the simplest interactive uses.

Microsoft and IBM went their separate ways in 1991. Microsoft continued development of its Windows operating environment with Graphics Device Interface (GDI) graphics API. IBM continued with OS/2 for several more years.

Skype's beta series

Those of you following the progress of Skype's beta series for version 4.0 already know that the seminal VoIP caller has been striving to get people interested in--and even aware of--Skype other features by rearranging its program's interface in time for version 4.0.

On Thursday, Skype released Skype 4.0 beta 3 for Windows, the third--and as far as we know, final--beta in the development series.

In addition to Internet telephony, Skype wants to make it easier to switch among IM and phone conversations, to place calls to non-Skype users' mobile phones and landlines, and to jump on board its video chats, which, the company admitted, most users either weren't using or didn't know existed.

At each of the three stages, Skype has daubed on more features that build from its very rough first attempt. In version 4.0 beta 3, the ability to scroll and search through your history is the punchiest addition; you can also filter by activity type.

There's also a new download manager for file transfers, a subtle visual "chrome" treatment when you switch into compact view (from the View menu), and a bandwidth manager. To keep Skype stalkers at bay, the company has added the option to report blocked users as abusive. As always, use this feature with care.

Laying it out on the table

While Skype is still accepting feedback to influence the final design, the essentials haven't changed much from the beginning, and the next release will almost assuredly arrive as the final version. Yet, there are still some visual flaws and an empty storefront. Skype's engineers may run out of releases in which to test new functionality.

Skype users, too, are calling for more visual personalization in the instant messenger, and are calling out against Skype's yanking of Skypcasts, which officially shut down in September 2008.

Beta number three is also missing birthday reminders and public chats, both slated for this release.

As seen from the air, Skype's 4.0 beta is shaping up into a communications tool that will fulfill its mission to streamline its app and make it more engaging on all fronts. Up close, however, the final release of 4.0 will need more cleanup if it's to really redefine how it's used.

Microsoft's First iPhone App

We'd wondered when Microsoft -- the world's biggest software company -- was going to start making apps for Apple's (AAPL) iPhone -- one of the main reasons its own Windows Mobile platform is losing steam. Here it is: Seadragon Mobile, a neat app that shows off Microsoft's (MSFT) Seadragon/Photosynth photo display projects.
TechFlash: It's designed for zooming smoothly in, out and around photos over the Internet, regardless of bandwidth constraints or image size. Seadragon's technological trick is to store images in multiple resolutions and deliver only the bits needed to present the view a user wants at any given moment.

So why release an iPhone version? Alex Daley, group product manager for Microsoft Live Labs, said the Seadragon team wants to make sure the technology works well on everything from a wall-sized display to a mobile device.

"The iPhone is the most widely distributed phone with a (graphics processing unit)," Daley explained. "Most phones out today don’t have accelerated graphics in them The iPhone does and so it enabled us to do something that has been previously difficult to do. I couldn’t just pick up a Blackberry or a Nokia off the shelf and build Seadragon for it without GPU support."

Of course, we didn't really expect Microsoft to kick out a mobile version of Office by now. But we do think it'd be smart if they could make a good iPhone app for using its Web-based Word, Excel, etc. apps -- before Google does that for Google Docs and Spreadsheets.

iPhone apps of the week

Before we get to this week's apps, I ran into a problem recently with my iPhone that I was able to quickly fix after a little online research. I had recently synced my iPhone only to find that most of my music was gone. When I got home and plugged in to my computer I saw that most of my storage space was taken up by "Other." Only about a third was music, about 900MB for apps (you better believe it!), and some smallish amount for photos. But more than half of the storage space out of 16GB was "Other," which is presumably for videos, but I don't have a single video on my iPhone.

A quick Google search brought me to a Web site that's part of the CNET family (shame on me for not checking there first). Our good friends and coworkers over at iPhone Atlas had already talked about this problem some time ago and had a very strange, but effective way to fix it. For reasons unknown to them, the fix required going into your e-mail account, navigating to the trash section, and erasing deleted e-mails. It seemed far-fetched, but when I tried it and went back to iTunes, my iPhone had returned to normal. If you're having this problem, or experience it some time in the future, you now know what to do!

For this week's apps, I decided to write about a simple free utility I found and a tower defense game you'll need to purchase to play.This free app is a one-trick pony, but it does its trick quite well

Night Stand is a free, simple, yet elegant clock utility that's perfect for (you guessed it) your night stand. The app displays a digital clock on screen with big easily read numbers so it's easy to check the time when you're bleary-eyed in the middle of the night. Find Night Stand in the iPhone settings section to choose from three colors, show what day of the week it is, toggle 24-hour time, and turn off autolock. Frankly, it doesn't do much beyond show the time (and you may want to leave it charging), but for a free app this comforting digital clock is a nice, simple addition to your iPhone. Unfortunately there's no alarm, but the developers say that in future versions we should expect to see one along with more skins and other enhancements.Start building your maze of towers early so you get maximum damage on every type of runner.

Field Runners ($4.99) is a polished tower defense game with crisp graphics, realistic sounds, and extremely addictive gameplay. I talked about the free TapDefense in last week's post, and while that is a great game, there's something to be said for the smooth graphics and open path style of the tower defense genre found in Field Runners. Instead of defending a set path, in this game you need to construct your towers in such a way that forces the baddies to take the most damage. As you progress you earn money, which allows you to buy more towers and to upgrade old ones. You also can unlock maps as you get further into the game for a bigger challenge. Field runners doesn't have as many available towers as TapDefense, but the developers promise more towers and content in coming releases. Either way, any tower defense fan will appreciate the overall look and feel of this challenging game.
